The Power of Paradox
Thursday, March 18 ▪ 2-3PM
"The Power of Paradox” explores the contradictory nature of today’s trend landscape, a world where women confidently wear Old Navy with new Gucci, where suburban mansions are filled with flea market finds, and Michael Graves’ teakettles from Target are proudly displayed on Viking ranges. Robyn Waters, Target’s former Vice President of Trend, Design and Product Development, provides a thought provoking environmental scan of the macro marketplace as she explores today’s key contradictory macro trends. She’ll help you make sense of the contradictions, make the most of the inconsistencies, and embrace the paradoxes of business as a source of fresh ideas.

Design Dialogue
Thursday, March 18 ▪ 4-5PM
Presented By: ![]() |
IIDA is pleased to present Swantje Roessner, BMW, and John Bricker, Gensler, in a provocative dialogue about the true and expanding nature of design, creativity, innovation, experience and the art and science of “thinking spaces”.
Roessner and Bricker, both accomplished and forward-thinking designers, with diverse expertise, will explore the nature of branded environments, design as strategy and the explosion in (and demand for) experienced-focused design.
Through her work in interiors, industrial and aviation design, Roessner will highlight the vast potential of design and design practitioners who invoke the ancient wisdom of “poesies”—making the intangible visible—thereby creating new strategies and implications for value. Bricker, who leads an integrated group of multidisciplinary designers and strategists in the creation of retail environments and workplaces, as well as in print, identity and other media, will illustrate a point of view that challenges design professionals to think beyond the traditional practice (and boundaries) of design and embrace an approach that requires strategy to be the question and the answer.
Moderated by IIDA CEO, Cheryl Durst, this in-depth dialogue will highlight the value, vision, scope and reach of design, and how the creation of spaces, objects and ultimately experiences is a pursuit that encompasses the aesthetic, the intellectual and the strategic.
Swantje Roessner is a noted designer, currently leading strategic design for BMW. John Bricker, Gensler Principal and Creative Director, leads the Firm’s Brand Design studio, whose award-winning work is based on a deep platform of synthesizing strategy and design.
